Ragtime exploded and evolved as a precursor to Dixieland and later forms of jazz with all-time greats such as the aforementioned Scott Joplin, James Scott, Jelly Roll Morton, Joseph Lamb, and James P. Johnson. Scott Joplin is considered the “King of Ragtime” and one of the “big three” composers of classic ragtime (Joplin, Scott, and Lamb). Considered the first completely American music, ragtime was popular towards the end of the 19th century and into the first two decades of the 20th century, roughly 1893 to 1917. It is the style of music that preceded jazz. Its rhythms made it lively and springy, and therefore ideal for dancing. Ragtime and blues, a related African American musical form that developed concurrently, are essential components in jazz music, which rose in popularity as interest in ragtime waned. Ragtime derived its name from the insistent, highly-syncopated “ragged” rhythm that distinguished it from other contemporary styles.
